Leaf Memory

The memory of a leaf

imprinted outline of a shadow

the pigments soaked through– rotting

and now lies the remnant lying

face down or face up

staring at a crime scene

at the diaspora of scattered stamps

which are now mere phantasm memories

of chlorophyll fading away

readying of winter’s ponderous weight

revealing their pomegranate red, orange sunset, yellow banana

a tragic phoenix death

the last sputtering gasp of a volcano

before decomposing for future fertilization
